Early Life & Background
Isaiah Terrell Gray, nicknamed Zay, was born November 29, 1997 in Columbia, MO, but moved to St. Louis 2 years later. After growing up in an ordinary middle-class life, Gray realized that he wanted to move on to do greater things and establish himself as a successful man in the music industry. Due to the rising popularity of Guitar Hero in the early 2000s, the game inspired Gray to take private guitar lessons at age 11. He wouldalso later adopt playing the trumpet in middle school for the school band. In high school, after realizing that neither the guitar nor the trumpet was right for him, Isaiah began performing as a live singer for his school’s R&B pop band. This gave him a lot of experience performing in front of live audiences and in events/venues. These would also mark as the life changing experiences that would devote Gray towards his own music.
Isaiah started producing as early as age 16, but it hadn’t become serious until age 18. In September 2016, Gray moved to Chicago, IL to pursue a post-secondary education at Columbia College Chicago. He primarily chose Chicago because of its location and Chicago’s substantial music growth in the hip-hop scene. Upon arriving in Chicago, Gray would produce anywhere from 1 to 4 beats per day in his college dorm in effort to pursue his life goal as a successful record producer.
